        Coring

        Application
Coring is the removal of a cylinder of material from a wellbore. It is the only mean of obtaining high quality samples for the direct measurement of rock and reservoir properties that cannot be addressed by other data sources.
To the extent possible, core samples are taken in an undamaged, physically unaltered state. The sample formation material extracted may be solid rock, friable rock, conglomerates, unconsolidated sands, coal, shale, gumbos or clays.
Cores provide both geological and engineering information, and their analysis leads to a profitable field development:

        Cores can be cut:
        • in the early life of a reservoir to provide the baseline data of saturations geology and engineering data, such as: mineralogy, petrology, environment of deposition, porosity, permeability, oil & water saturations, original volume of oil in place, etc…
        • during a reservoir mid-life, to help understand variability of the reservoir, or understand production, or completion problems, late life to evaluate the efficiency of production or injection programs and determine if we can get higher coring improvements

        Challenges
Coring and core analysis are essential to the exploration, development and production phases of the Oil & Gas industry. It gives an improved understanding of the reservoir and prediction of its performance. The quality and reliability of core data have become more important with the ever-increasing pressure to optimize field development, reduce economic risk with superior-quality coring technology.

Coring can be conducted by various methods with a variety of tools:
        • in the oilfield, coring is generally practiced with two methods: Full hole coring and sidewall coring
        • and the choice of tools depends on the coring environment and remoteness of the site. There is no universal tool available for any coring task and commonly multiple pieces of equipment are required

        Products & Solutions
COMMAND-SMFI may offer a large product range and features (or a custom drill products & accessories) to meet your coring challenges and requirements upon request.
